Employment Law | Minimum Wage Increase

Amid employment law reforms which are being made to encourage businesses to begin hiring again, it has been announced by the government that the minimum wage is set to rise.

From October 2012, the lowest paid workers within theUKare set to receive an eleven pence increase in their hourly salary, with the minimum wage set to increase to £6.19 per hour.

Despite the announcement, the 1.8% increase still falls below the current level of inflation, and the minimum wage for under-21s is set to stay the same. This means that those aged 16-17 will still earn a minimum of £3.68 per hour, whilst those aged 18-21 will continue to receive a minimum of £4.98 per hour.

Business secretary, Vince Cable who announced the employment law reforms late last year, said the decision marked the “right balance between pay and jobs”.

“In these tough times freezing the youth rates has been a very hard decision – but raising the youth rates would have been of little value to young people if it meant it was harder for them to get a job in the long run.”

Other employment law reforms which are due to take place throughout 2012, alongside the increase in minimum wage, include the qualifying time for individuals to bring a claim for unfair dismissal increasing from April 2012 and fees being introduced for the first time in tribunal claims.
