In the three months between April and June 2018, the number of Employment Tribunal claims lodged with the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) more than tripled year-on-year.
The news follows the publication of the MoJ’s latest official data, which also reveals that the outstanding caseload has more doubled during the same period.
Official figures suggest that the number of outstanding single cases was 130 per cent higher in the second quarter (Q2) of 2018, while the number of outstanding multiple claims rose by 34 per cent.
Experts said that the influx of claims could be traced back to the Supreme Court’s landmark ruling with regards to Employment Tribunal fees in July 2017, which found that the fees were unlawful, as they were restricting access to justice.
It is thought that more and more people are being encouraged to stand up against their employers since the ruling – and commentators have noted that the number of individual Tribunal claims is rapidly soaring towards the high levels seen before the introduction of the fees regime.
Interestingly, the MoJ’s report also shed light on trends in Employment Tribunal awards.
It found that awards for disability discrimination claims had typically been attracting the highest compensation pay-outs for claimants, with an average award of £30,700.
The report also found that the majority of claims lodged in Q2 related to equal pay (7,972), followed by unfair dismissal (4,801 claims).
